* Based on
Tezuka Osamu's early masterpiece,
The Next World.
Bateito Island mysteriously appeared in the
Southern Strait several years ago — once a beautiful place. But both the
Star Country and the
Union tried to claim it, and the resulting conflict polluted and destroyed the island. Presently the biologist,
Dr. Yamadano — researching the worldwide pollution in general, and the catastrophic changes on this island in particular — discovers a new race of humanoid beings, the
Fumoon, apparently born of this wasteland.
Returning to his laboratory with one such specimen, Dr. Yamadano calls his good friend the private detective
Higeoyaji, asking him to help escort the new life form to the
222nd International Conference, where Dr. Yamadano is planning to share his discovery with the world. The doctor reasons that this new species may be a sign that the organisms on Earth are about to change completely. But the being prematurely awakens from anaesthesia, destroying the laboratory by unleashing telekinetic powers, escaping into the night. Higeoyaji follows the Fumoon, and both are kidnapped by a space ship of unknown origin...
Kenichi, Higeoyaji's apprentice detective, gets on the case, noting that the glittering trace left behind by the escaping humanoid being, matches those found at numerous sites of animal disappearances. Kenichi and his sister
Peach Yamadano at the conference held in Star Country. It becomes apparent that Higeoyaji must be held captive on Bateito Island... but how are the Fumoon involved in all of this, and what will mankind's fate be?
