Personally I dont think this makes Otaku pathetic, its just that some people use BB as a way to eacape from real life I can see the similarity but thats not all to it.

Quite obviously we have less of a problem with the pathetic (at the beginning) main characters from the 2000's than we have with Haruyuki... He is aesthetically displeasing for one. Actually, that might be the main problem.
