I've been wanting to read this for ages but its translation still hasn't progressed beyond 73%... Arghh!

By the way, anyone has checked Yandere translations' review on it? http://yandere.tindabox.net/?p=278
It only made me want to read it more! XD

Wow that actually sounds interesting, i like philosophical stuff. A lot of the media i really enjoy is quite depressing so i'll probably give it a read when the tl is available.

Subarashiki Hibi was probably the most thought-provoking material I have ever read other than actual books on philosophy and psychology. It is based on Wittgenstein's Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus which is infamous for being extremely hard to understand (I actually tried to read it, but it just showed to me how actually poorly versed am I in this field). The visual novel, on the other hand, does a good job at transcribing his more understandable ideas to prose, though it still has to assume the perspective of somewhat abnormal characters to convey them given how far away they are from the notion we call common sense. Oh yeah, and you bet it's depressing, both emotionally and philosophically. I wouldn't be surprised if some people would become suicidal after reading this. Stay away from it as far as you can if you just want to have "fun". ><

I didn't know much about Wittgenstein before this, but this novel inspired me to work on my knowledge on analytic philosophy so one day I could actually comprehend his writings.

Oh yeah, and if you read Subarashki Hibi, pay attention to every little detail, no matter how insignificant it looks at the time. Most of the light-hearted slapstick which you'd normally just breeze through is actually foreshadowing for some really morbid stuff. I read this work twice and I can't believe how creepy some of the scenes I actually laughed at during my first time looked on my second go.

Some update on my list since 2013:

Awesome:
Katawa Shoujo (freeware OELVN (Original English Language VN))
Hoshizora no Memoria (a bit trivial theme (=stargazing) but beautiful VN)
Grisaia no Kajitsu (much better than the anime)
Kira*Kira (roadtrip + indie band theme)

Worthy of reading:
Cross+Channel (lengthy, repeating, occasionally frustrating, fandisc "Tower of Friends" also recommended)
Sharin no Kuni, Himawari no Shoujo (only actual VN, the fandisc is beyond lame)
Juniper's Knot (freeware OELVN, kinetic novel (no choices))
Narcissu (freeware, suicide fuel, kinetic novel)
Deardrops (like Kira*Kira but no roadtrip)

YMMV / acquired taste:
Yume Miru Kusuri (only Aeka's route is good, Mizuki rather meh, and Nekoko just plain stupid)
Osananajimi wa Daitouryou (My Girlfriend is The President, if you like to date genderswapped Obama or Putin... or a spaceship personified into a girl... Don't ask: Japan.)
Ori, Ochi, Onoe (mindfuck tale but some of the routes aren't very interesting, especially if you don't have prior knowledge of some other routes)

The anime packed 50 hours worth of vn gameplay into a mere 13 episodes. In fact, as someone who read the whole visual novel I can say that the vn cant even be compared to the anime.
Oh btw, there are official translations for the sequels of Grisaia. Can't wait to play them!

I missed the Grisaia kickstarter, did you help seikei project reach their goal tenerobert; and if so do you know if they've pushing for a steam release?

Oh and has anyone else noticed a massive increase of VNs on steam?

Kajitsu is going to be released on Steam, thanks to Greenlight. No word yet however on Meikyuu and Rakuen, but I'm guessing the same will happen to those two. My mistake, they are already Greenlit. So yeah, the entire Grisaia trilogy is confirmed for Steam release.

Just a shame that the minority of them are from relevant companies, as most of the are just forgettable low budget works. And the constant delaying of Higurashi is killing me. But I'm guessing that with the big success of the Grisaia kickstarter, and even more so with the Clannad one (which I backed), the people in Japan will start to realize that there's a big crowd of VN readers even here in the west.

We already have Planetarian on Steam, and this October we'll have Clannad, so it wouldn't surprise me if KEY will allow more of their titles on there in the future, which will hopefully help a lot with western localizations, considering their popularity.

So, I recall hearing something about Clannad full voice edition, but does anyone know if it actually has the same voice cast, since I'm actually only interested playing it for one voice.

^ It's the exact same voice cast as the anime, apart from Tomoya, who's unvoiced.

This is awesome; they aren't going to ruin it with a dub.

I guess I'll update my favorite visual novels now.

Previous versions are
from 2015

I'll append the one from 2015 with new additions about worthwhile reading.

Awesome:
Muv-Luv Alternative (most epic thing ever, no questions asked, or answered since I don't want to spoil)

Muv-Luv Extra and Muv-Luv Unlimited (only because they're pretty much pre-requisites to understanding Muv-Luv Alternative)
Cross+Channel (lengthy, repeating, occasionally frustrating, fandisc "Tower of Friends" also recommended)
Sharin no Kuni, Himawari no Shoujo (only actual VN, the fandisc is beyond lame)
Juniper's Knot (freeware OELVN, kinetic novel (no choices))
Narcissu (freeware, suicide fuel, kinetic novel)
Deardrops (like Kira*Kira but no roadtrip)

YMMV / acquired taste:
Clannad (so far seems not worth reading through if you've seen the anime... that said I lost interest to the VN before reaching After Story)
Kana, Imouto (incest themed utsuge, YMMV indeed... personally I'm fine with WINcenst and would put it comparable to Narcissu as being Depressing As Fuck™)

Shit tier:
Several VN not even worthy of being mentioned belong here. Therefore: I'm not going to mention them.

Currently reading:
Subarashiki Hibi ~Furenzoku Sonzai~ (aka Wonderful Everyday)
...opinion pending. It's highly rated and it seems it might become quite interesting. I'm still in the early chapters of the VN.

Kinda funny that this is my last post in this thread, since I would call SubaHibi my favourite VN at the moment and I read it quite a while ago in japanese.

Nekoko's route had some stupidly random choices. I kind of liking it best anyway, even if it's been too long since I've read this to recall exactly why. I clearly recall Mizuki's route being meh, though.

I'm so glad that skip is a pretty standard feature, for situations such as you've just described ferian.
That said skipping any VN on my tablet makes it sooo hot, I really shouldn't abuse the feature so much!
