Anime: Tokyo Ghoul 6b1s23

Warning: The following review contains minor spoilers.

Tokyo Ghoul is about tomatoes. Yes, tomatoes. Tokyo Ghoul opens with a young lady shopping in the super market at a fairly late hour. For some inexplicable reason she buys herself a years worth supply of tomatoes. And after she's done shopping, instead of going straight home, she goes to tour an aquarium, taking the tomatoes with her for some reason. Shortly after arriving she realizes that there's nobody in the aquarium, she goes in anyway and then suddenly she trips and drops all those tomatoes. Then the next thing we know is that she is in the center of that mountain of tomatoes having an orgasm. Meanwhile, Jason Vorhees who had been chasing her off-screen all that time because she had actually stolen those tomatoes, finally caught up to her. With a wrench in-hand, Jason politely asks her to give him the remaining tomatoes. She however, as well as you could imagine, says 'no' but does so reflexively; the reason being because she considers that being interrupted while she's in the middle of her daily ritual to be very rude (you can't just interrupt a lady when she's busy like that, you know?) — Needless to say, all hell broke loose. While they engaged in combat classical music is playing in the back background which is on a constant crescendo, effectively imbuing these scenes with a godlike quality to them.
Then after that super intense fight scene a shift in tone occurs, it's suddenly morning and now we see a girl in the distance on the side-walk while, accompanied by a merry atmosphere, an acoustic guitar and piano are playing in the background (Such tact, wow!). Now I'm wondering, 'who could this purple haired girl with an angelic innocence about her possibly be?'. Moments later she enters the coffee shop where our dear lead character is; this and that happens and now Kaneki goes out with purple haired girl. This is when it hits me like a son that so often had engaged in group activities chock-full of hyper-masculinity and one day suddenly confesses that he's gay; this purple haired girl is the tomato girl from the beginning isn't she? If my guess is right, unfortunately for our naive little friend, purple haired girl here would have no real plans to date him. Cutting to the following scenes: Oh. My. God. This is so Psychological! She's just like Jonah from Monster in that, by the time she gets to engage her target she already knows everything there is to know about her target and all that's left is to psychologically break down her prey! Luckily for Kaneki though, God arbitrarily decided that it was time for her to go, and so he cuts the ropes of metal pillars from a construction building and brought them down on her sorry ass. But don't worry, Kaneki survives and now he has her organs transplanted into him.

After all that Kaneki gets really hungry and eventually sets out to get some food but ends up in a dark alley full of tomatoes he mistook for meat. Here he unfortunately stumbles across four-eyes-kun. Four-eyes-kun says that kaneki is invading his space while spouting out false-analogy, but what four-eyes-kun forgets is that being a ghoul out on the street at night means he's in the jungle, and like a jungle, territories are claimed. And just when he's getting all up in kaneki's grill, emo girl comes to the rescue. The thing here is that, the 'territory' as he calls it supposedly belongs to him but he never set foot in the territory because tomato girl claimed it. You see, tomato girl is feared not only among humans but ghouls as well. This is because she is capable of summoning not two or three but up to six big slimy neon tentacles at once. And so within a brief moment he gets his ass whooped by the emo girl because the territory actually belongs to her and her people.

Do you happen to that episode in SNK where Mikasa uses a piece of bread to metaphorically shove her lady-dick down Eren's throat and makes him cry like a little bitch? Well, I can say with confidence that Mikasa would be very proud of Kaneki. Not only can he chug down on just about everything in the fridge, from tacos and milk to mayonnaise and sour cream, one after another, but he can also swallow tomatoes all the while crying like the little bitch he is.

All of this goodness is all just in the first episode! Isn't that epic!?

Yeah, it's very hard to take Tokyo Ghoul seriously. It's chock-full of shock value and unintentional comedy. The severe lack of psychology which is pervasive in the horror genre regardless of what medium we are talking about, is very much present in Tokyo Ghoul, for the most part. Tokyo Ghoul also doesn't seem to know the definition of subtlety, it's always trying to be all up in your face, literally. But none of that really matters, Tokyo Ghoul's biggest problem is not that it's a rushed mess, it's that its campy as all hell. I'll say this clearly just in case I haven't emphasized on it enough: Whatever potential Tokyo Ghoul had was already destroyed within the very first episode.

Tokyo Ghoul attempts to depict the struggle between humans and ghouls but it doesn't really work because at the end of the day 'ghoul' equates to 'cool'. They try to convey this theme mainly through multiple oversimplified perspectives, namely that of the humans and ghouls.

On the human side we have a blood thirsty old man who would normally just be a one-dimensional villain who laughs manically but is apparently 'humanized' simply because he's on the human side and is wearing a damn wedding ring. Suspiciously, he bares an uncanny resemblance to Kuradeel, I mean, Studio Pierrot got him all down from the appearance and hairstyle to the anatomically incorrect facial expressions. Who's Kuradeel you might ask? He's a Saturday morning cartoon villain from Sword Art Online. This old mans partner is his complete opposite, a sane man with his own notion of justice. He's a character who's mostly poorly motivated by the death of plot device number 384 and because of that he would look at the ghouls as nothing more than animals that PLAGUE THIS ROTTEN WORLD.

On the Ghoul side we have Kaneki. Partially due to the rushed pacing, whatever 'development' he gets is unconvincing, which is also why his character appears to do a total 180 later on. Kaneki, as you already know, is a bitch who cries over every little thing concerning his now declining humanity. He's so much of a bitch that he needs an insecure emo-girl with a nauseating hairstyle to play babysitter. He's also quite gullible. Speaking of the devil, emo-girl looses her composure so easily it's comical... no, actually, it's very, very hard to watch. We also later see that she is afraid of... birds. Yes, birds, this is a hot headed ghoul mind you. No, it has no thematic relevance, it's just there to superficially make her more appealing; I should really be calling this 'Moe Ghoul' instead. At one point, she had the full intent of killing someone as to not have the group compromised, but all that person had to do to stop her from killing her was to call her cute. Yes, cute, somebody please shoot me. There's also this four-eyes guy that tries very hard to be a delinquent, and harder still is his attempt to sound like a yakuza but fails miserably because whenever he reacts with the stereotypical "Haaaaah!?" he sounds like he has cockroaches in his throat. Do you want to know what the best part is? Despite him clearly being characterized as nothing more than wholly unsympathetic and pathetic, they give him a brief back story just as soon as a death flag is set in an attempt to add to the aforementioned theme. And let's not forget about token loli who's mother sounds even girlie-er than her. At one point she yells "Daddy's scent! Daddy's scent!". The direction makes it look like she's getting off on it like, "this strong, stinky and manly smell, daddy must be close! Daddy, daddy please give me some of your nice and thick protein, I really need it right now!". The awfulness of the scene in question is further exacerbated by melodrama. As the child is running through a crowd after her dear daddy and completely ignoring her mothers cries, the mother conveniently gets her diaterrupted multiple times by people bumping into her — I really, really wish I was kidding.

Anyway, after all that is set and done they toss that drama aside to turn back to silly action. Only now we have yet ANOTHER character thrown into the mix, an androgynous Frankenstein shota (assumed) with a girly hair style and whom appears to have snowballed into a trash can behind a clothing shop (whilst, just like what you would see in a shounen, one of the villains becomes an ally).

...Yup, I'm done.

Do you want a well written horror story? Look elsewhere. Do you want to be ively entertained by what is ultimately a useless time-sink that reeks of horse manure? Then by all means, go ahead and watch Tokyo Ghoul to your hearts content. If nothing else, there is still plenty of bloody fun to watch unfold despite all it's short-comings.

Oh dear, what is all this crap that's spewing out of my mouth? The beginning of the review alone must have thrown you way off, I sincerely apologize for that. Most of what I've mentioned here doesn't actually happen in the anime... it happens in the manga. See? This is why you should always read the source material, you won't get high quality tomatoes otherwise. -9/23/14

This is a story about a boy who is changed into something he fears. He then has to learn how to live on the border between what he is used to and what he fears.

The show is tremendously violent and gory, but not extraordinarily so in it's genre. It kind of falls into the Supersayan-problem of ever more powerful enemies that can only be defeated by the main character after becoming stronger, but it varies enough (more so in the second season than the first). Despite the characters feeling all over the place in the first few episodes, there is a point to that and after two seasons I actually quite like how the character arcs turned out.

What makes this story for me is it's underlying themes. It's about the big subjects of life and death and love and hate, but it does so in a different way than I am used to. The show seems to ask by showing murder after murder, battle after battle, slaughter after slaughter: isn't this pointless? Every time it sets a character up to be violently taken apart it makes a point to say that that character had value and now he or she is no more. It makes the point of the show, despite it's extreme violence one of pacifism.

It is a tremendously depressing watch, but definitely something I haven't seen before and something I don't know if I should recommend. Watch this if: a. you like violent anime and just want to see the pictures, because it is well made and not focus on the plot or b. you like feeling like crap after binging on short episode after short episode.

PS I don't like the title songs, but I am sure many people disagree.

Overall, I loved this anime, it was a dark, gory, psychological drama that was exciting to watch. I had a similar feeling the first time I watched Hellsing; I love when characters are complicated, I love when characters that tease out something about the nature of what it is to be a person.

The disparity between who the characters think they are, who others think they are, and who they end up becoming by the end of the show is something the creator of this series tried hard to make meaningful, and I have to say, they were successful.

I loved the way this was animated, the blood and gore was done in a tasteful way, the scenery didn't take away or add too much to the anime as to distract from the show, however, this anime suffers greatly from censorship, and I might not recommend watching this anime unless you can view the uncensored version.

The musical score on this anime is lackluster, it just isn't very good, but at the same time, it fits the animation, so I don't necessarily have any complaints.

Never in this anime did I ever fall in love with the story, the reason to watch this anime is for the characters. They're complicated, but so easy to understand. They feel real, as though I could step into this world. If that's your cup of tea, then please watch it.

Verdict: If you don't like the first episode, you won't like the entire anime. For me, I would rate it a 9, but because this review has to be useful to other people, I'm only rating it 8 overall.

Da Primeira Impressão
Acredito que assim como eu, uma boa parte da galera não sentiu muita atração com a sinopse ou até mesmo com o primeiro episódio (muito bem construído, por sinal). Claro, isso vale para quem não teve contato com o mangá. Mas de fato, a surpresa foi muito boa!

Basicamente, o plot principal é a luta entre duas raças, dos Humanos e Ghouls. Com isso, tem a clássica jornada do heroi. O protagonista, sozinho no mundo – sem família – é jogado à força na trilha da aventura. Muitas vezes, o protagonista Kaneki lembra Shinji Ikari (Evangelion). Principalmente em uns momentos de bebezão chorão :P

Bem vindo à Anteiku…
Muito da história, se a por aqui: Anteiku. Uma pequena cafeteria do 20º distrito. Poderia ser um local mundano… poderia. Assim como já dito na sinopse, o protagonista Kaneki adora tomar um café por aqui. Papear com o amigo, ler um livro depois da escola. Era tudo tão comum, até ele conhecer Rize, uma garota apaixonada por leitura, tanto quanto ele!

Tokyo Ghoul se a em Tóquio (dãã) e em específico em um distrito (algo como bairro), o vigésimo. A sociedade humana convive com os chamados Ghouls, algo que podemos também chamar de Carniçais. O problema da vivência em comunhão entre essas duas raças é apenas uma: Ghouls se alimentam de carne HUMANA.

Eles não sentem prazer ou gosto por nenhum tipo de alimento, à não ser café. Mas né, quem aguentaria viver tomando café a vida toda? Esse é um dos motivos de fachada da cafeteria Anteiku. Ao contrário da maioria, os ghouls que vivem no 20º distrito – e sob uma espécie de jurisdição do líder da cafeteria, Yoshimura – eles tentam viver em um clima de “paz” com os humanos. Eles apenas se alimentam de suicidas!

Dualidade
Kaneki é um universitário, sem pai (nem chegou à conhece-lo) e que perdeu a mãe ainda quando criança. Tentou se virar sozinho e pegou o vício da leitura. Em uma dessas estadias na cafeteria, foi que conheceu Rize, uma ghoul!

Fato é que os dois se atraem, mas né, cada um com seus motivos. Os dois vão se conhecendo mais, até que em um destes encontros a ghoul tenta comer o pobre Kaneki. Por infelicidade – ou felicidade – as pilastras do local onde estavam acaba cedendo e BUM, cai em cima dos dois.

O médico acaba que salvando a vida de Kaneki com ajuda dos órgãos da ghoul Rize. Mas é aí onde mora o problema, ele acaba virando um meio-humano, meio ghoul!

Humanos vs Ghouls
Perdido no mundo, Kaneki parece não ter mais chão para viver. Ele não quer virar um assassino e se alimentar de humanos. É nessa que ele acaba morando e trabalhando na tal cafeteria Anteiku.

Como já dito, os ghouls são criaturas vis e são incessantemente caçada por organizações especiais, no caso a CCG. Cada distrito de Tóquio é minuciosamente inspecionado e a quantidade destes inspetores é conforme a demanda. Quanto maior o número de assassinatos, maior será força tarefa!

Ao contrário de todos os outros distritos, o líder da cafeteria Yoshimura, tem punho firme para controlar os ghouls do 20º distrito. E é aqui que de fato a trama começa a tornar forma. O interessante da série é de que mostra os dois lados da moeda: Há os ghouls que não querem o mal da sociedade humana. Em contrapartida, há os humanos que caçam os ghouls à bel-prazer.

Tá para nascer uma entidade ou força política que una estas duas sociedades? E se ele for de AMBAS as raças? É mais ou menos esta a esperança que você telespectador vê em Kaneki. Ele pode de fato unir as duas raças? Ele teria poder para isso?

Aproveitando muito bem (ou quase) o +17
Não tenho conhecimento sobre a versão blu-ray de Tokyo Ghoul, porém, quem assistiu sabe da censura da série. Não dá pra falar se isto estraga, mas posso te dar a certeza de que atrapalha. Se você puder esperar para ver a versão blu-ray, e no caso, for sem censura, espere por ela!

Outro fator interessante, e claro, devido à ótima direção de Shuhei Morita (concorreu ao Oscar por Possessions/Short Peace) é que a animação não entrega nada mastigado. É de suma importância o telespectador estar atento, ou o roteiro vai embaralhar na sua cabeça. *fica a dica*

Ritmo Thriller
As coisas em Tokyo Ghoul acontecem de forma muito rápida! Das viagens psicológicas de Kaneki às lutas energéticas, a quantidade de informação ada é transbordante. Creio que não há um respiro se quer nesta temporada, o que causa um furor gigantesco para ver o próximo episódio.

Muitas vezes para o telespectador, o mundo pode ar a impressão de “mal-construído” ou “mal-explorado”. Talvez a premissa da série, não seja dar esta abrangência. O foco é a cafeteria Anteiku. O núcleo principal é o de Kaneki. A construção do “meta-mundo” vai de cada um imaginar e refletir o que quiser. Sabe ‘Walking Dead’? Provavelmente nunca saberemos a verdade por trás de tudo, mas vamos acompanhar o desenrolar definitivo de Rick/Kaneki.

A Máscara
Os ghouls tem a mesma aparência dos humanos, à não ser quando se transformam, onde ganham poderes (Kagune) e ficam com o globo ocular avermelhado. Quando são reconhecidos pela população – em especial pelos agentes da CCG – am a utilizar máscaras de disfarce.

Tokyo Ghoul tem uma gama bem interessante de personagens. O mais interessante é de que há o “bem” ou “mal”. Há o lado que cada um personagem defende. O protagonista Kaneki é muitas vezes aquele “chorão” que tenta fazer o bem para todos, ficando em cima do muro. Seu contraponto, é Touka Kirishima, ghoul e parceira da cafeteria Anteiku. De personalidade forte, é a parceira de missões e que no fundo, nutre uma afeição sentimental por Kaneki.

Os destaques vão para Rize, a bela ghoul “implantada” no corpo de Kaneki e que funciona como “segunda personalidade” de Kaneki e para Uta, que confecciona máscaras, com estilo e personalidade bem marcante!

Não dá para deixar de citar – e reparar – no ghoul gourmet ‘Shuu‘. O cara é uma mistura de ‘Dorian Gray’ com o estilo ‘Romero Britto’ de ser, principalmente na combinação de roupas. Claro, não dá pra não esquecer a referência com Hannibal!

Pierrot e Produção
Este é mais um belo trabalho do estúdio Pierrot (YuYu Hakusho, Naruto) e o destaque é para animação do início e fim de temporada. As lutas são extremamente bem feitas – tirando a censura :( – e a trilha sonora dá aquela base gore-thriller que a série merece.

O ponto alto da série são os episódios 11 e 12. Não dá pra assistir de forma separada, ou pelo menos, não recomendaria. O trabalho com que a produção dá para cada Kagune (o poder dos ghouls) é minuciosa e faz com que cada um tenha seu próprio estilo de luta – e nem sempre todos sabem lutar – e estética.

O Que Mais Posso Esperar?
Algo próximo do ‘Attack On Titan‘, onde humanos “tentam” viver com titãs. Algo próximo – talvez – de ‘Terra Formars’ ou mesmo, próximo de ‘True Blood’. Seriam os ghouls uma forma de vida mais desenvolvida? Os humanos não estão mais no topo da cadeia alimentar? São pontos bem interessantes da série e vale ressaltar que trabalham bem em mostrar o egocentrismo humano e de querer estar no topo de tudo, sempre. *O personagem AMON, um exemplo clássico do macho alpha, por exemplo*

Drama psicológico, gore, sangue – se fosse nos anos 80, teria tripas voando também :p – sexo, tortura, são algumas situações que a série vai lhe escancarar. Sem contar que há momentos de pura tensão e de emoções fortíssimas, já aviso que pode cair um suor dos olhos aí :p

O hype do ano e talvez a melhor animação dos últimos meses, vale à pena assistir. Não crie expectativas, alimente-as conforme for vendo. Não tente adivinhar o que vai acontecer no fim…

I decided to write this review because i think "Tokyo Ghoul" is very underrated.I personlly think the show is very decent, the character rating are underrated as well, the main character is actually pretty good and in the final episode he becomes even more awsome.You should definitely watch the entire series, its only 12ep.There will be another season of the show that will come out in Jan. 2015, and im very hyped for it, I expect to be an amazing season considering the ending of the first one :twisted: .If you search for psycho/gore anime with some good animation and decent characters then you shuold definitely watch "Tokyo Ghoul".

Tokyo Ghoul was one of the most hyped titles of summer 2014 but it quickly proved to be far weaker than what its first episode promises. It starts off as a psychological thriller about the main character suddenly turning to a man eating monster. His freak out was done masterfully and you were made to think the rest of the show would be a constant internal struggle between his human and monster sides. Maybe he will accept it and go on a murder spree or maybe he will find a way to control it.

But nope, turns out the whole thing was just an excuse to have a lobotomized main character entering a world where everything needs to be explained to him. He is just used as a plot device for lazy infodumping, a guide for the viewer to explore the society of these man eating monsters. Basically the show is not a thriller about his internal struggles at all; it is about a poorly conceived world inside a fighting shonen and the whole thing falls apart early on.

Just like it happens with all shonen stories, this one too takes its material way too light in of exposition and way too silly in of unnecessarily violent scenes. You are mostly busy watching flat characters cutting people to pieces while throwing in some very simple and yet over the top reasoning for whatever is going on. Thus, not only the ghoul society is cartoonishly simplistic, but it is also presented in such an extreme way that it’s impossible to take it seriously.

These ghouls are supposed to be hiding amongst humanity and praying upon it since forever, yet humanity isn’t living or acting any differently because of that. Ok, they have anti-ghoul squads but everyday people behave as they would in our world. All they do is have a few posters as warning to kids not to be going in dark alleys alone. That makes it seem like these monsters that constantly kill and eat them, are as worrisome as teaching children how to cross the street. If this show was trying to be remotely realistic, the world would be a completely different place, since humans are not at the top of the food chain and are hunted all the time as if it’s still the prehistoric times instead of a civilized modern world. It is especially laughable when they keep saying it is very hard to find the ghouls hiding amongst them because they look like people, when they know their skin is very hard. All they have to do is sting someone with a needle. If that person doesn’t bleed, voila, it’s a ghoul.

The ghoul society ain’t that better either as there is no way to tell what these monsters really think or want as a whole. Some are complete maniacs who slaughter and arrange arena death duels for pure entertainment, and others behave like normal humans who coexist peacefully with them. The fact that they can have normal humans as lovers or can successfully transplant their organs to them, further proves that they are simply humans themselves who for no given reason can only eat human flesh and have superpowers. Oh, and just for the heck of it, they also drink coffee without a problem. Whatever.

Thus all attempts to flesh out their society are crock; they are just people themselves, not a different species. They have so much diversity in mannerisms amongst them to the point they have no identity as a whole. They even lack reason in having their own secret society. Heck, the very fact that they can feed on corpses they find in morgues or cemeteries further proves they don’t even need to kill people; they do it for fun, and not because their instinct compels them to do it. This trashes the interesting concepts the show was setting up in the early episodes, such as the internal struggle of the protagonist, or the need to murder people in general.

And the problems don’t even end there. As far as storytelling goes the pacing is extremely fast, as the anime attempts to cover a hundred manga chapters in only a dozen episodes. Nothing lasts long enough for you to care about. Even in of aesthetics there is very little to hook you besides a few cinematics here and there. And even those are ruined because of the ridiculous amount of censorship. All action scenes consist mostly of white beams, black beams, and color swaps, which hide everything that is going on.

The protagonist is another issue. He is a complete pussy, screaming at everything, being worthless in battle and oblivious to common knowledge. I mean, it is normal for him to be terrified when thrown in such a situation out of nowhere, but this doesn’t make him a good protagonist. Why do you think so many people dislike the protagonists of Tokyo Revengers or My Hero Academia? Such leads are always the least interesting. The fact that they constantly survive in every battle with crappy plot armor further damages the appeal of the show.

Speaking of which, there is no consistency when it comes to who can survive what. Anyone the scriptwriter deems plot relevant ia plot armored with 10 inches of titanium walls. He constantly tries to make it seem like anyone can die in this show and yet several times per episode people will be jumping in out of nowhere to save plot related characters, or the characters themselves will have superpowers activating exactly when they are about to die. For a show that is constantly trying to excite you with gore or to make you think nobody in it is safe, this saps away all the tension from the battles. You know right away some characters will always be conveniently surviving in the lamest way imaginable. There is literally a scene where a super elite ghoul hunter has overpowered the good guys and out of nowhere a little defenseless girl sprouts super tentacles and wipes the floor with him. And all of that, while she was crying, had zero experience in combat, and didn’t even want to harm him. Power levels mean absolutely nothing; even if you can blow up mountains you are still going to get killed by a little defenseless girl if you are not plot relevant.

Even death is meaningless in this show since people who are dead will be magically coming back to life or will be replaced by others who have the exact same character. A ghoul gets chopped to pieces? No worries, it can eat itself and heal completely. A little girl lost its parents? Nothing was lost, she gets to use their superpowers as if they are still around. There is no finality to anything; death is as meaningless as it is in Dragonball or Bleach.

The biggest troll of them all is how they constantly try to make you think the protagonist is slowly learning and becomes less of a pussy. But that is a lie since every time his superpowers activate and gets ll angry, leads to nothing after the battle is over. Furthermore any so-called character development he gets is basically mimicking others instead of having a personality of his own. His fighting powers are not his; they are a copy of the ghoul whose organs got transplanted to him. His behavior in battle is again not his; it’s a copy of how his attackers behave, meaning he heads for childish poetic justice by treating the bad guys exactly as they treat him. Oh, hi Jason, I am going to be like you now! That is what a spoiled 10 year old would do, not a mature character.

Tokyo Ghoul is pretty much the same thing as Dean Wonderland. Promises excitement, mystery, and internal conflicts but all it delivers after a few episodes is a gorefest regarding poorly conceived superpower battles, shallow world building, and characters that come and go as the plot demands for it. There is literally a war going on in the last episodes and you have no idea who are these people, why do they kill each other like it matters, or why would you even care if there weren’t more than 2 minutes worth of screentime dedicated on making us care about them.

But wait, maybe the manga will be better. Everybody who reads it will tell you it is a masterpiece. Yeah, don’t believe them, it is still crap. It’s so poorly thought out it can’t even explain why don’t the ghouls simply camp outside morgues and be done with it.
